Fight the Bottle Bill Today

Grocery prices are already too high. A bottle bill will increase the cost we pay for everyday beverages like soft drinks, sports drinks, ice teas and bottled water. That’s going to hurt Rhode Island working families and the many small businesses that provide jobs and are the backbone of our communities. Rhode Islanders already have a convenient curbside recycling system that is economical and collects all recyclable materials. Why would lawmakers create a new system that makes working families pay more and increases costs for small businesses?

There are proven ways to make our existing recycling system more effective for all types of packaging. Innovations that have worked elsewhere to raise recycling rates can be implemented here too, and they are funded not by consumers but by the producers of packaging. A bill that increases costs on consumers and hurts local businesses’ bottom line is not the answer. Instead, let’s work together toward a better solution that improves our state’s recycling program – one that keeps our beaches and green spaces clean and reduces litter – without costing Rhode Islanders more.

Rhode Islanders Deserve Better

The Ocean State deserves proposals that not only prioritize the environment but also do not add to the financial strain faced by families and businesses dealing with higher costs for essentials. It’s vital that we find solutions that benefit both our community and our environment without burdening residents and businesses.

We should be looking at more effective and innovative ways to support improved recycling. A costly bottle deposit system forces working families to pay more for beverages and lug bags of bottles and cans back to stores for their deposit. It also forces small businesses to find ways to handle all these empties, an expense that jeopardizes their businesses and employee jobs. A better idea is to focus on initiatives that make recycling more effective without increasing costs on those who can least afford it.
