The Bottle Bills Deserve a NO Vote: Reason #3 to Can the Bills and Your $0.10 Question of the Day

Too many Rhode Island families and local businesses are struggling under the weight of inflation and rising costs. The bottle bills (H-6207 / S-996 and H-6206 / S-997) proposed by the state legislature would only make things worse. The reasons are a dime a dozen (or bottle) to reject these bills.

Reason #3 to Can the Bottle Bills:

It’s a tax on vulnerable Rhode Islanders. Seniors, people with disabilities or those who don’t have a convenient way to lug bottles and cans to a redemption center will not always be able to redeem their deposits. For them, the $0.10 fee acts as a tax on every beverage they buy.

Your $0.10 Question of the Day:

Where will bottle redemption centers be located? We don’t know. Bottle redemption centers will be required in every Rhode Island city and town, but there is no information about if they will be conveniently located or what permitting standards will be required. This could create challenges for Rhode Islanders who may not have reliable transportation, time or who have accessibility concerns.

Rhode Island can’t afford a bottle bill tax. Vote “NO” on the bottle bills and let’s find a smarter way to keep our state clean without hurting our families and local businesses.
